Manta Saddle launched in Scotland

Cycling is a beneficial activity for all parts of the body except two.
The ischials, which ache, and more importantly, perineal arteries, nerves, and all the soft bits – of both sexes – which risk being permanently damaged by prolonged saddle pressure; they did not evolve to support up to 7x a rider’s weight when riding the bumps.

A comfortable, non-injurious saddle has long been the holy grail of cycling. A small Scottish company, Manta Design Ltd, launched a trial version of just such a saddle a few years ago.

The radically unorthodox Manta saddle was conceived by Skye-based designer Jon Catling in 2001. After many tribulations – such as raising funds for manufacture – but with invaluable technical support from DuPont, an initial 500 production units were commissioned.

The Manta saddle overcomes the inadequacies of other purported ‘comfort’ saddles, without their compromises.

Designed for, and ‘by’ the body: ‘The Manta saddle is so different because it’s designed specifically for a bike-mounted human anatomy, not just to fit on a bike as an afterthought.’ Says Jon – ‘Other comfort saddle designs reduce the area of contact, merely removing the nose area, which is fine for the perineum but increases pressure on the rest of your backside, they compromise control of the bike or make it harder to pedal. Because the Manta saddle supports the body load over almost the same area as a typical office-type chair, offering a natural seating area, and puts no pressure at all on the medically sensitive bits – which were established by clinical tests. It is also far better ventilated than other saddles. It does feel very different, to begin with, every rider who tested the prototypes ended up wanting to own one. Once you’re used to it, it’s positively unpleasant to go back to a conventional saddle.’

The obvious USP of the Manta saddle is its comfort, therapeutic nature, and safety, but another benefit is a reduction in fatigue, thanks to the articulated surface area which offers support while allowing free leg movement and is ‘tuneable’ to suit rider preferences. It does need perhaps a little more time and care to set up correctly depending on the bike/rider. Added to the lack of stamina-sapping discomfort, this should enable both recreational and competitive riders to increase their travelling distances and reduce their times.

Compared to conventional saddles: • vastly improved comfort and ventilation • near-nil pressure on arteries and soft body parts • …whether they are male or female • virtually no pressure on sensitive areas • encourages circular [performance] pedalling • the best thing to find under you after a ‘big hit’ landing short of a sofa • potential increase of performance for road, distance, off-road, and exercise machines • removal of stamina-sapping pain.

The aim is to market the saddle from Skye, worldwide, and by selling through key retailers and demonstrating it to product reviewers, professional cyclists, clinicians (to verify its medical advantages), mainstream cyclists such as couriers and perhaps celebrity cyclists to maximise our publicity (a significant, professional cyclist positively trialled an early prototype).

Demand has been worldwide, with export sales – initially into Europe, then spread to North, South America and Australia. Awareness of the saddle was previously limited to the production CAD-based animations, postings to the website indicated a worldwide interest in the design and enthusiasm to acquire the product. A few have covered vast distances.

There is no doubt that the Manta saddle is a disruptive technology that should change our expectations of saddle comfort forever.

About Manta Design

Manta Design Ltd’s first product: the Manta Saddle for bicycles Engineered Seating for The Sublime Machine A bike saddle correctly engineered for the human body – with a genuine difference

Compared to other ordinary saddle alternatives the Manta saddle is totally different – it is designed by the rider’s point of contact. Articulated technology supports the rider’s weight over the maximum possible area for any bicycle. A genuinely unique innovation.

The Manta saddle changes the whole feel of being seated on an upright bicycle.

Compared to conventional saddles:

Vastly improved comfort and ventilation. Near-nil pressure on arteries and soft body parts …whether they are male or female. Virtually no pressure on sensitive areas. Encourages circular [performance] pedalling. The best thing to find under you after a ‘big hit’ landing short of a sofa. The potential increase of performance for road, distance, off-road and exercise machine …furthermore, removal of stamina-sapping pain.
